Steam pipe vent that doesn’t rattle
The tallest steam pipe in our house that goes up through four floors has a vent on it that eventually rattles after replacing it. Is there a different type of vent we should be using here? This particular one has no radiators off the pipe earlier. [IMG_3137](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:3Sa3:img_3137.jpeg.jpg)

Oh sorry…to follow up just replacing the vent has been working well for a few days now.. I had an extra maid-o-mist size D (biggest) and it’s been working great. I just wasn’t sure if there’s a special type of vent to put on a terminating pipe vs a radiator. It’s a 1/8″ thread.

What size and type of vent are you using? I would probably go with the largest vent you can get, and maybe even double up the vents. It’s probably working hard to remove a large volume of air, being the tallest pipe in the house. Start with a Gorton #D, maybe even a Gorton #1. https://www.gorton-valves.com/products
Wondering if you have a 1/8″ NPT thread on the port (typical for radiator mounted air valves) or a larger threaded port, like a main vent port.
I’m just an amateur but a big fan of Dan Holohan’s books. Check em out if you haven’t already. “We Got Steam Heat!” is a good starter, then you can also read “The Lost Art of Steam Heating.”

How many times have you replaced this vent and had the same result?
