Steam Boiler Needs Replacement in Crown Heights

Thanks all. We wound up using Aladdin and they were fantastic. We have a new steam boiler installed beautifully. I highly recommend Aladdin! We will use them again if we need.

The low water shut off failed and our steam boiler was ruined. We are in an old limestone townhouse. We need to fix our heating and interested in getting advice on how best to do that since the boiler was so damaged. We are open to and leaning towards keeping our steam system, but have been reading a lot about switching to hydronic or switching to ductless mini-splits (or other options advised). Though we believe we have a single pipe steam system currently and also want to make sure our heat functions well. We’re looking to get help quickly, and I am working from home on Friday 11/17/17 to try and find someone who is knowledgeable, provide a quote and then hire to fix this. We are realistic in how much this will cost and our budget for it (based on what I have researched at least). We are ready to start the project immediately once we find a knowledgeable professional who can advise us on our options and help select the best path forward. We are in the middle of doing this right now but we are putting in a new gas-fired steam boiler. We are using Aladdin Plumbing Corporation – they have been great at helping us get the best boiler and helped with permits and rebates from National Grid. Just so you know it takes a while (a few weeks) to get the permits for all of this.

If you’re going to replace the steam boiler, I’d recommend that you get someone to size the replacement. Most boilers are about 1.5 to 2 times oversized. Most contractors either go by existing or use a rule-of-thumb.
Changing to Hydronic should save about 30%-40% on fuel, but may not be easy or quick.

Lastly, in NYC, steam boilers should have an auxiliary (backup) LWCO…

You won’t need to wait for permits to start this work, especially if you’re not replacing gas pipe before the boiler’s “appliance”, or gas shut off, valve.

Was this for a multi-family? Most 4-story Brooklyn townhouses use a Burnham IN 6 or possibly 7, or equivalent. Do you know what method he used to size the replacement boiler? Can you post a picture?

I am pretty sure that it was a stickframe with an existing oversized boiler . Dean had contacted me to take a look, but i was in barcelona at the time.
