Stairwell skylight shade

We have two skylights, one in an extension and one in the main stairwell. The extension was always really hot and I was sure it was from the skylight, so when we later redid the main stairwell I insisted on installing a motorized shade there. I use it in the hotter months and when we are away. However, we also later insulated the extension, and to be honest I think that has made much more of a temperature differential in there than the shade did in the main stairwell. The motorized shade is appealingly easy to use, and I didn’t want to use one of the other options because I really wanted to be able to have nothing blocking any light most of the time, but to be honest it feels like overkill for the temperature payoff in that space.

Looking for anyone who has put a shade or blind on their stairwell skylight. The summer sun beats through our skylight and adds to the heat on the top floor making the AC’s work harder = $. I am curious as to what other homeowners have done to cut down on the suns rays/heat up there. Pictures and product suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Original row houses had a laylight – stained glass cover that lay under the skylight. Not air tight so air can circulate in cockloft. Works great.

Sure, I don’t see why you can’t do a motorized shade. I’ve never done it or seen one, but it sounds like a good idea.

I have 2 springloaded curtainrods with a piece of fabric that’s a bit translucent stretched between the rods to minimize the sun beating down on that area, it helps a lot but makes the area a bit darker especially on rainy days
