We live in a 10 year old condo in Brooklyn with no insulation in the floors/ceilings so we hear everything happening with our neighbors. Now we have new upstairs neighbors who never seem to sleep – so we never do either.

We bought them thick rug pads but it’s not helping – and they usually aren’t doing anything rude, we just hear every single footstep, alarm buzz, phone ring, sneeze, conversation, etc.

Before we give up, sell, and move away, I am trying to do some research into the possibility of soundproofing the ceiling. I’ve found several companies through internet searching who do this kind of work, but know that this isn’t guaranteed to help enough, and am hoping someone here can recommend one of these contractors.

I did try searching this forum and wasn’t able to find anything recent. Can you direct me to any links?

I heard back from one company who charges $500 for an initial consultation. It would be applied to their service if we went with them, but non-refundable if we didn’t hire them to do any work, so I declined.

I know a guy who came really highly recommended to me by someone I trust. Price was reasonable. I really wish I had done it! 347-621-7718. It doesn’t need to be a special soundproofing company. Just a good contractor who knows what he’s doing.

This was something I am looking to do in my condo as well. My upstairs neighbors are incredibly heavy walkers with a young child to boot and the building contractor made zero effort to insulate however during my research I only found soundproofing material vendors (this one seems good and they were very patient with my many questions: http://www.soundproofcow.com/) leaving me with a need to find a contractor. I hope you find some info, I’ll share anything else I find.

I have used roxul between the floor joists of an apartment that’s directly over a bar. I took Db readings before and after. Before the roxul, sound levels reached 110Db. After installation it was 60Db. Before putting down the new wood flooring I also put this blue plastic sound barrier as well (forgot what it’s called). The bass can’t be reduced unless you plan on spending a lot of money. I instructed the bar owner to use smaller speakers and lower them from the top of the ceiling by 6 feet (bar has 16ft ceiling). Overall I am very happy with the roxul, and most importantly so are my tenants.

We did a Full gut renovation when we bought and so we did the resilient channeling with sound batting and the special soundproof board in preparation for having renters on the 1st floor, and and sad to say that it is still SUPER loud in the garden apartment. We haven’t rented it out yet, but when friends stay over and stay there they tell us how bad it is. We live in the top 3 floors and our kitchen is on the parlor in the back and right over the bedroom. We found that one of the worst things for noise is the space under the doorways as well. It makes me nervous about even having renters at all as I know I will have to deal with lots of complaining.
Ultimately, just be warned that all of that is really expensive, and Im sure it does make some difference than if we did nothing, but don’t go into it expecting it to really take away the sound and vibrations.

We just tell prospective tenants that it is an old house and they should expect a lot of bleed-through noise. Easier when they live below than above, of course.

Check your condo documents, there should be guidance as to excessive noise etc in which case you may be able to have the other unit owners assist with the cost of whatever remediation you need. You don’t specify what the actual issue is but I would suggest you also lobby the condo board about issues with noise issues that persist all night
