Solar lamp post, and LPC approval?
As Bob notes I think you could get an answer at the staff level if you want to make that call – the online guidelines (section 8) address installing new lampposts as a staff level issue so I imagine they could answer the question about just switching out an existing one for a new light source.

Does anyone have a solar lamp post, sort of like this one? https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/canora-grey-outdoor-post-lightlamp-post-light-fixture-post-lantern-with-pier-mount-base-matte-black-w006883834.html. And if so, are you happy with it?
Also, does swapping out the top of the lamp post require LPC approval? I have read the guidelines and cannot figure out whether they would need to be involved. For what it’s worth, the 1940s tax photos of our home show there wasn’t any kind of lamp post there at all originally.
If LPC regulates the lamp posts on our block, it’s hard to see how. Everyone has a different style, shape and even color. I just want to replace it with a solar model that looks similar and would be the same color..

I’m not surprised that your 1940 tax photograph doesn’t show a gas light in front of your house. These were heavily promoted by Brooklyn Union Gas in the early ’70s. When we were looking for a house some real estate ads touted a location on a gas light block. We bought our house a few months too late to take advantage of a group purchase of gas post lamps on our block. I have no idea what LPC makes of these post lamps. I don’t have one, but, if I did, I think I’d just swap out the light source , if needed. FWIW I think there’s a company that specializes in the repair of these ’70s “historic” gas lamps, so it might be possible to keep the original. If it uses an incandescent mantle, instead of an open flame, it’s probably much brighter than a solar light, albeit less environmentally sound.

I don’t know the history of ours, but it’s not gas. It’s electric but we just want to switch to solar.

I personally would just unstitched solar head that most closely matches the existing one. However it wouldn’t hurt to spork someone at LPC. They’re pretty easy to deal with.
