Soil replacement logistics
The company I had do some work in our backyard had a plastic drum on a hand truck that they used to move soil and other dirty things though. They put down the brown paper (ram board?) that comes in rolls from door to door to minimize dirt inside.

Hi,
We are replacing the top 6″ of soil in our Bed stuy rowhouse backyard. We plan to have 15 cubic yards of soil delivered and brought through the house into the backyard during the course of one day. How is this usually done. Can the soil be dumped on the street in front of our house? Would we need a permit for this? Any other suggestions on how to pull this off? Thanks! Daniel

15 cubic yards is a massive amount. I get three yards of mulch and it’s a pile about three feet high and five or six feet wide. No way around carrying it through the house. It’d be nice if there were a straight shot so you could use wheel barrows. Otherwise by 5 gallon pails. I don’t know about any rules or regulations on this. Hopefully a few loads that you can move fast. Don’t block the sidewalk or you run the risk of complaints. But why replace the entire yard? If you’re worried about contaminated soil for growing vegetables, build some raised beds for them alone.

We have a baby and want to be able to crawl in the yard now and play in the yard as she grows up so we want to replace the top layer of soil now. Luckily it’s a straight run through the house to the backyard so we can use wheelbarrows.

Did you send a sample of your soil for testing? I live in crown heights, and mine came back clean. I think you get results back in ten days. Otherwise, to move dirt across a brownstone, it’s usually easier to get the 40 lb bags of top soil from home depot, which you can get delivered on pallets($1.50 per bag). But it sounds like you would need an incredible amount.

We did the same thing, had the soil dumped in front of our house. Fortunately we have a side alley so we didn’t have to worry about getting it through the house. We gave soil to neighbors that asked for some and at the end of the day we hosed it down. No one seemed to mind too much.
