Smelly water, sediment leaking through front foundation wall.

We’ve periodically had some water leak through the front foundation wall but we’re getting in a new place – along the front left side of the cellar and it smells bad. Luckily we have an internal french drain so it’s stayed out of the rest of the cellar. Has anyone had similar experiences? We do have sewer/water main insurance. I’d be very pleased to hear about anyone’s experiences with similar problems, making a claim, etc.

Do you have American Water Resource for your sewer insurance? Most of my clients have that, and they are a but tricky to navigate.

It sounds like the newer smelly leaks are as you suspect from the sewer line. Most are the originals from 100 =/- years ago, made of cast iron that rust & corrode over the years and with ground movement from other construction in the area or tree roots etc crack & leak.
The periodic leaks; make sure that all grading against the front wall drains away from the house; gardens in the front are cute, but if you do not have a masonry barrier of paving against the house; pitching away from the house, you will get water through the front foundation.
Good luck on your sewer pipe Insurance claim. Sorry to say but if it is 100 +/- years old, they will not pay out. You would be better off putting a monthly payment into your “Capital Replacement/improvement” fund.
