sliding door for partition opening

GM: I am in need of a person who can install a sliding door; I have a partition with a opening of 3-4′ opening in the middle; I would like some type of sliding door so that I can close it off when needed and open it. thank you.

Just a correction: I believe it was a customer at home depot who said barn doors may be too heavy and may not work; not salesperson at home depot

20-30 years ago for jobs like this, there was always a guy or two in the neighborhood who did this kind of thing for a few bucks cash. But these days it’s hard to find anyone good. Maybe it always was. It’s just so expensive to live in the city now that you can’t really get by doing odd jobs.

Thanks resto. Years ago i tried small jobs without billing travel with a fixed hourly rate. Could not make it work. Now that i only work on doors, i set a very high first hour rate for the first on site hour- i start the clock when the tool bag passes the threshold, and it covers a detailed telephone consulatation and the time spent ordering product. It is working for me and my customers seem happy. That does not mean i can take every small job that comes along.

Steve, if you’re doing small jobs on T&M you have to charge for travel it’s fair for everyone involved.

Fastest way to find help at Home Depot is to start dragging one of their big orange rolling ladders down the aisle amazing how fast they will appear out of nowhere to stop you, then you can get what you want!

Same with Lowes, after waiting nearly an hour once to get a few skids of concrete loaded in my truck I just took one of their forklifts and started loading myself, amazing how fast they appeared out of thin air and finished up for me in less than 5 minutes!

I would be just as happy if i could convince you to stick your own doors. That dont sound right.

Terryhop: if you can get the parts together and are sure everything will fit and i dont have to run around purchasing anything, i can find a couple of hours to do this. I do hourly repairs now, something i did not do even two years ago. For it to work, i either have to know what i am bringing or have to have it there. It is the running around that kills small jobs for us.

@doorsbythetinkerswagon, This seems like a pretty easy job. Maybe we could work somehing out where I hang the barn door for him, and use the proceeds to hire you to stick out my doors! J/K. I’m have some luck with the salvage doors, and I found a bunch of old ones I have in storage, but I probably will need to buy some jen welds and stick soon to fill the non-matchers.

You could try this guy Geo at https://www.geoprojectsnyc.com/. Super nice guy. Excellent painter, but his focus right now is on custom carpentry. I don’t know if he’ll take the job, but it’s worth call or email. I’d email him a picture of the area and perhaps the door you want installed.

you know, maybe you can go to dykes to inquire about product and ask them? or wait until others roll on here with suggestions. i have a guy who does a lot of interior work and is broader in scope than i am. i may give him a call. he told me he was going to stop work for a while to gut reno is own house. here, this is him, Tom staggs, handikraft llc646-247-3593. he is capable of this but what he really does is rebuild staircases. he is a finish carpenter. not unlike myself.

its really easy. but i really don’t know as not many people want to do small jobs and those that do are usually all over the place in their skill set or have other issues. i would put myself forth and while things have been a tad slow, i have enough work in front of me that i should not get involved.

i installed a by pass door set that a customer had waiting and sized for an opening with the hardware on site in less than 30 minutes once. that was new construction in the ‘burbs and things go faster there than in here, due to non standard openings.

and i just reread your reply. sorry, anytime i hear anything about home depot my blood pressure rises and i begin pounding the keys. yes, if your height is not too high, you can set up a bifold. but if you have an odd height you may have issues with the doors. so if it is a little high, you can close it down a bit by trimming out the opening or adding more wood and molding to the opening to make it look the part. also, keep in mind, that bifold will not close all the way to the edges, so if real privacy is the issue, they may not do it. a barn door may not seal too well either but that you can adjust a little. bi folds need that edge open so the corner of the door does not hit as it opens and closes.

what that home depot person was saying makes no sense to me at all. i mean, what else would they sell these things for? to mount on the outside of barns?

as i have said on here before, if you ask someone in an orange apron anything YOU are in serious trouble. how do you know when someone in an orange apron is saying something they know nothing about? his lips are moving. i suppose it is better he erred on the side of caution and did not sell you something that he thought might fall off the wall.

so this is what you do: the hardware has to be either mounted to the studs or what you can do to mount to drywall is make a decorative wooden plate and mount the plate to the drywall, catching a stud where you can, and mount the hardware to the wooden plate. we mount heavy objects on walls this way when we can not catch a stud.

thank you for your assistance; i wanted to put up the barn door; looked at them in Home Depot; not too expensive and appears easy to install; however the salesperson thought that the sheetrock partition may not be able to hold them; in other words they may be too heavy; so I am looking at lighter weight maybe bifold; need to find a carpenter

i am not putting myself forth here but do a little research to figure out what you might want. the gulf between the two options i can put forth here is wide and the first option will be the easier and least costly with the least interruption and can almost be done by a handyman:

a “barn” door which hangs outside of the wall on a visible track mounted above the opening and spanning the width of the opening and an equal amount to one side or the other.

and then there is the traditional pocket door that slides into a pocket in the wall. makers of the modern pocket door hardware include Johnson (they have a website and are located in something like missouri or oklahoma, i forget which) and stanley. the johnson has great instructions with the kit but their telephone support is a little, shall we say, provincial. the product is really good. stanley is of course a big outfit. i like the johnson product better. i think dykes carries both. i replaced the rollers on a johnson the summer before last so i know that Dykes still carries their product. opening a wall for this sort of operation is a big mess to install a small door and will require opening a larger section of wall and cutting studs and installing a header and when someone calls to ask me to either open the wall to repair an existing that was improperly installed or to install one, i turn it away. it is the mess with the drywall or plaster i do not want to get involved in.

also, if you have someone do the johnson or stanley, when they close the trim up around the top and sides of the door, they should not try to close it so close or tight that you can not see or access the roller hardware at the top of the door (the right way is to leave a 1/2″ or better gap in the frame and close that with stop molding; like in the old days). the inexperienced people – master tradesmen they will tell you they are – who do these doors fail to lock the latch over the slide out for the rollers and they become unhooked and it is not possible to rehook them without taking the trim off. becomes a problem. i have had people to call me to do this and have refused because i would have to rip the frame apart or cut in through the wall.
