Slate tiles

Hi,
I need to get the slate (?) tiles near/below the roof of our brownstone fixed, but don’t even know where to begin. Who does this work?
Thanks in advance!

We’ve used George Parsons for a slate roof replacement on a project. They did such a good job that I will be calling them to work on my own house soon.

Internachi (a home inspector’s association) and Vermont Slate Co. both have classes on slate roofs. If internachi’s is not accessible to the public, you can email me and i will give you the print material from it. i only took the Vermont Slate Co class last week (this is free and is CEU) so a lot of this is fresh in my mind: the slates from the Washington County area of NYS and Vermont are among the most durable in the country; a lot of slate sold in the US is now imported and not put through the same testing and grading processes that Vermont Slate uses (vermont slate mentions 3 tests); understand that there are non fading and fading slates and if you have non fading on your roof now, you may wish non fading later or vice versa. (i will have forgotten all of this by next month).

I am working on a project now where slate will be needed and i would have to say, go to Vermont Slate. They do have an accessible regional sales rep, Joe Coffey. He can answer questions but he is not based locally so it would probably be hard to get him to visit.

if anyone on this board has to deal with local contractors with things that are unique or historic, take classes and talk to sales reps and then talk to the contractor. you will be able to ask the contractor questions to see if their knowledge aligns with what you have learned and, if they and you are thinking or saying different things, perhaps there is a valid reason why a contractor’s field experience has taught them something that may not be wrong but may be above and beyond conventional knowledge. when you run into this with contractors, you know they have a lot of experience.

the field supervisor from Bashnagel was conversant with me.

Baschnagel Brothers replaced my degraded vermont green slate roof with a new one that matched exactly—landmark property—and did a bunch of copper roofs and gutters and stepflashings for the various features on the facade. Highly recommend them as they know their stuff and residential jobs are easy for them. They’re usually doing churches.

i refer Bashnagel Roofing around to my customers with slate roofs. they are kind of big. but i can say this: i got their name from a neighbor 20 years ago and he told me “i bring them in every four years for a little maintenance on my slate roof”.

when i bring specialists in to deal with my customers, i query the field team to see that they know their jobs and i have done this with Bashnagel and they can talk the talk.
