skylight regulations for top floor of townhouse

Hello- we want to put a skylight on the top floor of our townhouse in the middle of the floor- so basically over the stairwell. There was no skylight there before as the top floor is an addition that was added several years ago (it was converted from an attic to a proper 4th floor). Can we put a regular velux solar operated skylight there or does the code dictate some kind of special skylight with wire? We would like to use a vented skylight for air circulation up there, so we would reconsider if we had to do a fixed skylight with wire. Does size or placement of the skylight matter with this?

Ok thanks. I’d still like to know if we need a wire mesh domed skylight up there since I don’t think we’d do the job if so. This is a two family house if that makes a difference. If this is required I think a lot of people must do this work without a permit because it seems like there are plenty of skylights without mesh in BK…

i think you will need a permit for this work – you’re cutting a new opening in a fire-rated system (roof) and there are rules about fully clear access routes on rooftops to allow FDNY activity.
