A neighbor has shown us his walls, finished with Venetian plaster. Are skim coating, tadelakt, and Venetian plaster all variants of the same idea – finishing the wall with plaster, and then not painting? Or does one paint over skim-coated walls? Our neighbor did not paint his walls; the color is incorporated into the plaster. Pros and cons of the various approaches? This is something my husband would be doing.

Tadelakt is waterproof but Venetian is not. Venetan is mold ad mildew resistant. Both easy to maintain. There is also lime based stucco similar to Tadelakt but easier. Tadelakt is fairly time consuming.

Typically after skim coating, the walls are painted. There is not paint over the tadelakt or the Venetian; they are the final finish.

We used Tadelakt in a recent renovation and it was beautiful! In many ways, it’s a lot like Venetian plaster in that it’s a polished finish surface that does over a substrate, I think in our case we used cement board.
