Simple/inexpensive rooftop railing and/or deck?
We have a townhouse with stairs/bulkhead that lead to roof where there is a small poorly made (but permitted) roof deck. The railings are not secure and the deck is pretty useless. We’ve had many companies out to give us a quote to 1- remove existing deck, build railing around entire roof, build roof deck and cover another section of roof with synthetic turf. So far none of the companies that came out have been able to give us a real cost estimate. They all want to know how much we want to spend before they quote, and another company wanted us to pay $1800 for them to “design” it and then they would tell us what the cost would be. Does anyone have a contractor they have worked with to install railings on a roof and also a deck/turf? Nothing fancy. Just sturdy and safe.

I used Susan Hager’s company, Sketch & Hammer (sketchandhammer.com). She was well connected to all the NYC code-compliant “specialty contractors” needed to install a legal roof deck. There was no subcontracting. Susan arranged the sync’ing of all schedules to coordinate and complete my job on budget and on time. A pleasure to work with.

There are lots of ways to approach this challenge with an equally broad budget range. Your intended use of the space should drive the approach. For instance, if you’ll need a complete demo of existing deck/rail and would like to install a merely functional yet attractive replacement that would be a low end cost. If you plan to really use the space for leisure and entertainment then sturdier, longer lasting materials and a full design can be explored. Teak or Ipe deck tiles for example can be laid fairly easily. There are adjustable pedestals for uneven surfaces. I’ve got some rough numbers per sq. ft if you’d like to explore it with my company Root & Stalk. I design, maintain and install gardens of all sizes. Message me at jessica@rootandstalk.com

We worked with Lopopolo ironworks this summer and they were great. Also, Adam at Urban Exteriors did our decking (we used porcelain floating tiles but he also works with wood and other materials), and he was very knowledgeable and great to work with. I don’t think they are the cheapest, but I found that it was easy to work with them and create a design that was affordable and safe. Again, this was a deck above an extension rather than a roof deck, but similar nonetheless.
