Sidewalk violation/new water main

We just received a sidewalk violation from the City. I’ve heard recommendations to wait and let the city have it fixed as well as recommendations to do it yourself within the 70 days given. Wondering if people who have been through this have thoughts, and for those of you who had it done yourself, does there seem to be much of a danger of the work not passing the city’s inspection (the reason I’ve heard to wait). Also, we’re wondering if it might make sense to replace our water main now (it’s the original from early 20th century) and whether we can/should do it all at once. TIA.

The private sidewalk repair company will get a permit to do the sidewalk work. Your contract with them should require that the work passes DOT inspection. If your water main is really 100 years old, it is probably lead piping and should be replaced under any circumstance. Note that it may be possible to replace the water pipe without digging up the sidewalk. Talk to the pipe replacement firm about this . If the sidewalk does have to be dug up, the pipe work has to be done first.

we waited and let the city do it. the neighbors across the street did as well. much less hassle.
