Hi. My sidewalk has a pretty significant trip hazard. It’s had a slope since we bought the place, but the recent rains seem to have resulted in that sucker rising up another 1/2 inch or more. It’s pretty clearly related to the huge tree there, and half of the problem is the neighbor’s. I’m about to send in the Expedited Sidewalk Repair form, but I haven’t received a violation, so I’ve heard mixed things about whether I even qualify. And am I right in understanding if it’s because of a tree, it’s fully the City’s responsibility anyway? Also, anyone have a recommendation for grinding it down? I think it’s risen enough that it just needs to be replaced eventually, but that seems pretty complicated given the tree. And, it’s a trip hazard, so I don’t want to do nothing until the City finally gets around to it. All advice (and recommendations) appreciated. Thanks. Parks Dept. has to deal w/ problems caused by trees so you can try them. Also phone 311 & tell them you have a sidewalk problem & they’ll pass you on to the right department.

Using an angle grinder to do this would be very hard, considering the slab must be sloped a ways back. I have tried it.
They rent out big machines but I have heard that even those can take off only 1/16″ a pass making them impractical for slabs that are heaved really bad.

DOT will fill in the rise with asphal as a quick fix.
Make sure if you call 311 don’t use words like hazard, trip or anything that’ll get you a violation.

You are now allowed to make the tree pit larger; I think up to 10′ x 6′ if your sidewalk is wide enough, (10′ parallel with the curb) I do not know off the top of my head how wide the remaining sidewalk still needs to be, but if you can make it wider from the curb, giving the tree more space & eliminating your trip hazard. That is what I would do. Then look into a mettle guard around the tree pit to keep dogs from pooping there etc. Plant up some ivy to keep it green.
If you are in a landmark district, you will need Landmarks permission, if not, just get a mason to do it
