Scaffold recommendations, please!

Hi everyone,

Great conversation. Lots of good advice. Do you have the names of companies you have rented from? My dilemma is finding companies to rent/install scaffolding at residential properties. I would even use a hanging scaffold if the company were willing to install and do the proper DOB paperwork.

Hello! I need to scrape and paint the facade of my Bed Stuy brownstone and I need to rent or have tubular or pipe scaffolding with netting installed. My brownstone is under 40 feet high and is 20 feet wide. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Are you physically going to do the work yourself or hire people? I was going to work on my facade years ago myself and was going to rent and install the scaffold myself. If you are going to hire people best to have them install it professionally. If you have workers whom you hire or even someone else’s crew, you want to distance yourself from this as much as possible. Check insurance, etc. If there is an accident, everyone gets sued.

Most people hire a firm to do the work and that firm would be responsible for all of it.

If you are doing this yourself, call around. There is a place by me in maspeth that i had called. I did rent a baker from them once. I found them easy do deal with. But there are others.

Silvercup Scaffolding. They are more on the expensive end of scaffolding companies, but they do a professional job.

Code wise, if it’s from the street side. You also need a sidewalk shed. Though, i’ve seen people just put up the scaffolding and get by, only because no one complained though. Also, to work on scaffolding you need a 4 hour scaffolding user card. A daily inspection log also needs to be onsite and signed every day, it’s basically a checklist, that you checked the scaffolding/shed to be safe and maintained.

A cherry picker or a scissor lift could also be an option. Though, i imagine scraping and painting will take a single person awhile. So, i’d personally go with the scaffolding if you’re going to be doing this work alone.

For a cornice and pointing project, my bldg. on 5 Ave would have required a shed. The costs were astounding so I ended up renting a cherry picker for two weeks. It still required permits and insurance etc., but was still significantly cheaper for my 8-day project. I could’ve been done in a week if it didn’t rain, so remember to factor in weather delays. It might be worth doing a cost benefit analysis between hiring a small crew to handle all scaffold details, permits etc.. and finishing the job in a week or two, vs. doing it alone and extending your rental, insurance and related costs. If you’re on a quiet side-street, you might get away with other options like a hanging scaffold. Good luck.

Those cherry pickers are not as expensive as one might think. We looked into it once.

Yep cherry picker rentals are very reasonable. Note however you’ll need a DOT permit if you keep them on the street, not for instance your backyard. This is in addition to whatever DOB permits your job requires. That in itself isn’t so bad. Nor is the amount of insurance DOT requires a contractor’s to carry. The kicker is a ‘non liability’ clause DOT insisted on (in 2021), and we couldn’t get a permit otherwise. It cost my ‘well insured’ contractor ~$10k to amend their their policy to satisfy.

And i have worked of both pump jacks and scaffolds and something tells me the cherry picker will be much nicer. Even though scaffolds have adjustable boards, you cannot choose any height so you sometimes have to work in a less than comfortable position. I have always wanted to try a cherry picker. You can move it to the most comfortable position.

And i am not sure it is wise to use a scissor lift. Not with the obstructions in gardens. I used a telescopic platform lift in the 1980’s and it was limited.
