saving two trees that have been girdled?
Sadly our neighbors girdled two giant trees in their backyard facing the back of our building. The trees provide amazing shade and green in the summer. I know the trees are their property but can they just kill these very old beautiful trees (without a permit also) ? Is there any way of saving them, if we can persuade the owner that we will take further care of it? The only reason they probably want to get rid of them is because they are costly to maintain. The owners don’t even live on the property so they really don’t care.

if my neighbors raked leaves and swept up the seeds twice a week instead of cutting the trees down, they would not be couped up inside now complaining of weight induced knee pain.

BTW I too hate raking leaves, but love trees, so I put up with it. Several years ago the enormous maple street tree in front of my house had to be taken down because it was hollow and in danger of falling. Through a tip on this page I learned of the Parks Dept. Tree Trust program and was able to donate to get a replacement tree planted the same season. Tat honey locust is now as tall as my house. I also allowed two self-seeded trees to grow in my back yard [an oak and an elm]. I rake up a LOT of leaves. It;s worth the trouble.

Many people hate raking leaves so much that they go to absurd lengths to destroy trees. On my block there’s a large elm street tree that a neighbor girdled and, apparently, tried to burn. Fortunately whoever did this was incompetent in his vandalism, not going all the way around. the I’m happy to report that the tree is still thriving years later.
Many years ago my wife and I tried to save another street tree that a vandal had attacked with a knife, peeling off bark all around. We were unsuccessful.

I look forward every fall to leaf removal for my little 18 x 30 garden. Neighbor’s sugar maple gives us shade all summer and gorgeous color in the fall. The secret the the leaf removal enjoyment: leaf blower!

Doors, my explanation is not what I think makes sense for me but it makes sense for them. Imagine every year to have to deal with leaves and seeds….omg so much work, if only those trees were dead then I can relax!

now that i think of it, OP and others, a neighbor of mine has what look like three colorado blue spruce that are about 2′ tall and very healthy. they do not want them. they keep asking me to take them but i am not sure they would survive in the spot i can put them (low sun against the house). I might take them to my parents as they would like them. but if anyone would like any healthy and full small colorado blue spruce, please reach out to me. i am afraid if i do not act they will dig them up and dispose of them.

john, i don’t understand people who cut down trees anyway. and your explanation makes no sense to me. i suppose you have insight into a mindset that some of us will never understand. we have people like this over here – only more of them – and i told a neighbor before she cut down a beautiful healthy tree in her yard (that her late husband had planted not long before he died, can you imagine?) that i like trees and if she took it down, i would put a massive tree in my yard. and that is what i did. not massive, but i am working on it

They do it so they dont have to deal with the leaves, and seeds etc. For some people trees are a nuisance and would rather not have them, what happens when the trees die is a worry for another day

so resident 2: what is the logic to them doing this? could it be that they will fall and the insurance company pays a claim? i cannot understand why someone would do this as eventually they will die and have to be dealt with .
(i once lived in a city where it was illegal to cut a tree down and a neighbor did this to a tree, i understood it there).

Owners cannot “Girdle” trees in a built up urban area. What happens as they die & start falling in whichever direction the wind is blowing? Call the Parks department, they will probably say that they are not responsible for trees in back yards, but insist to get through to a Supervisor that will appreciate the danger of the situation, they may even be able to tell you how to rescue them. Or they will definitely force the owner to take responsibility for them … If they have to come in a cut them down, the owner will be sent the bill.
