Save the Castle!
I agree! To demolish one of our Landmarks for a barely 300 seat school is a terrible idea! Yes Sunset Park is in desperate need of schools but erasing a piece of our history is not the answer.
The city will be taking public comments on its proposal only until July 15th. The School Construction Authority (SCA) is moving very quickly to act on this so we only have a very small window of time to protest. If you appose this plan please send email comments to sites@nycsca.org, although snail-mailed comments are preferred. Please also send a letter to: New York City School Construction Authority, 30-30 Thompson Avenue, Long Island City, New York 11101, Attention: Ross J. Holden.
The SCA is required to submit the site plan to the Mayor and City Council. Unless the plan is disapproved by either party by 2/3 vote, the site plan is deemed “approved” (the City Council may override any disapproval of the Mayor by 2/3 vote, as well). If the plan is disapproved, the SCA may revise the site plan and resubmit or withdraw the plan.
Please take a moment to write to the School Construction Authority insisting that they look for another site.

Hello Brownstoners, I am writing about a landmarked building, 4302 4th Ave (at 43rd St) in Sunset Park. Some of you might be familiar with this beautiful red brick, romanesque revival structure. It was built in 1886 as a police station and it looks like a castle.
This long neglected, but incredible building is being targeted by the School Construction Agency (SCA) for possible demolition. Because the neighborhood is in desperate need for additional spots the SCA has determined that the location of this landmarked building would be a good place to build a new school. Please see the attached article: http://patch.com/new-york/sunset-park/proposed-sunset-park-school-pits-parents-against-preservationists-0#email-in-article-id
I have reached out to the LPC and Councilman C. Menchaca. Any other suggestions of what can be done to save this building? Thanks!
