Rotten window rail

Is it possible to replace the rotting bottom rail of a double-hung, wood window?

and some window stop has no screws. the houses down off beverly road and that area, the stop is stuck in a dado cut in the frame and if one pulls on it, it will come out. it can be pretty snug.

the sash is removed by removing the stop on the inside of the window. even on the old windows there are screws under layers of paint and those screws are made to be removed to service the sash and weights. once the stop is out, secure the weight chains or rope so they do not fall into the pocket and remove the screws securing the chains. i have not worked on rope hung sash since before i went to college and cannot recall how they are secured. i installed some stained glass sash for the montauk club some years back.

it is my impression that villa works on modern windows, but i may be wrong. a man did call me last week and asked me to spend an afternoon working with him on his windows and i did. during the conversation, i think he mentioned villa and i think he implied they work on modern. the only reason i worked on his windows was he spent a long time talking to me on the phone describing the issues and he had the parts and he understood that it was not fully my thing and that there were some uncertainties to my success; in the end all went smoother th an i thought it would and he was happy (i could probably ask him to post here). and since he was paying me hourly, he was happy to clean up the mess. i worked for an installer pre college and sometimes during college, but from where i sit now that is beginning to seem like a long time ago.

i can replace that rail if you can get the sash to me but if the sides or, what we would call stiles on a door, are rotted, the entire frame will have to be done. someplace here i have sash bits that may match what you have. i do not service windows as i do not want to get involved in taking things apart on multiple floors of people’s houses and carrying tools upstairs. i like to keep the mess on the front steps.

There are a bunch of shops in Brooklyn that rebuild windows. Try HM window restoration or method restoration. If other windows might be needing maintanance, it might make sense to try to bundle.

Try Vila Window Repair (718-871-8452). Not sure if this is in their wheelhouse but worth asking. Will likely involve removing the exterior casing in order to access the sash so needs someone with very strong carpentry skills.

For some reason I can’t get the photo to load. It’s the bottom rail of the lower sash – the part that closes on the sill & seals the window shut. It has rotted on the outside. Window is in good shape otherwise & the first estimate I got was $2,500 to replace so I’m hoping to repair.

Yes. I assume you are talking about a sash. Is it a mortise and tenon window? Is it painted on both sides? There might be some different options depending on the extent of the damage and the design of the sash. Can you post a picture?
