Roofing Approach

Also, do not let someone tell you the roof has to be replaced because of something like this (if it is a roof joist). It may have to be cut open but a lot of this can be managed from below (yes, either way the ceiling is getting open up).

I became a roof inspector to help people save roofs, not replace them.

The top floor of my brownstone appears to have a sagging beam at the ceiling. Should I call a roofer or a contractor? And… do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

ok. this can go two ways. if you have a crawl space in the cock loft, it can be simply a ceiling joist. if you do not have a crawl space in the cock loft, it is probably a roofing joist/rafter.

if you have a crawl space and it is a ceiling joist, a regular contractor can do this. if it is a roofing member, you will need a roofer.

it sounds to me like you need a roofing inspection anyway and you need a contractor (inspector) who can look at this, know what is going on, and can advise you how to proceed.
