Reverse Osmosis or Water Softener?
Water softeners do not remove heavy metals like reverse osmosis does. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of getting a reverse osmosis system, maybe you could try a countertop water filter that can remove metals too, like these ones I found?

Maybe? They’re generally cheaper and work pretty well. I hope you find what you’re looking for!

I was curious as to whether a water softener also removed the dangerous metals that a RO system does. I am aware that the water softener doesn’t clean the water. Do I also need to treat RO water if I purchase it?I don’t think I do because RO is supposed to be the purest you can get.
thanks

You generally want to put a softener before RO. The RO would soften the water some, but you don’t want to waste lifespan of expensive RO media to take out minerals that could be easily removed by cheap ion-exchange system.

The following article says, Reverse Osmosis filters try to manipulate the water mechanically and water softener systems use chemicals to do that. RO system purifies water by removing unwanted contaminants and molecules. On the other hand water softener removes magnesium and calcium through a process of ion exchange turning hard water to soft. I recommend to read the following article.
