Revamping our poorly designed deck and backyard fence.
Lots of posts from me lately, so thanks for all continued help and suggestions. One more from me. Looking to upgrade our deck and fence. The developer whom we purchased our home from built a wood deck that extended to both sides of the property. When it came time to purchase the home, the DOB wouldn’t pass the inspection because they used wood and not steel, per their drawings. The result is a wonky hacked together deck that is relatively unsafe and poorly built. Same goes for the fence they put up. You can see from the photo, it needs some love. Looking for a crew of solid builders to help. If only we had a huge budget, but alas, we do not. Creative problem solving a must. [1](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:Qui7:1.jpg.jpg)

Fences can only be 6′ in height.

@no-permitz, thought about doing the 1×6 on top, but the darn alley cats use our backyard as their litter box. Don’t want to give them any more ammo to enter our space. We also want to go up higher in the back. Thanks again!

I can’t see the deck – but I have some suggestions for the fence.
Any horizontal fence I have seen that spans 6′ or more between posts, always warps. I could correct the spacing between the vertical 4×4 posts to 4-5′. I would also add a flat 1×6 on top laying flat to deflect water and give a more finished look. You can do this without purchasing much material, and reusing almost everything you have.
