Resurfacing Interior Concrete Walls

Hey Everybody! I’m looking for suggestions for materials to resurface an interior concrete wall. Ideally I’d like to skim-coat it with drywall mud or plaster, but I worry about whether that will adhere to the concrete well enough (it gets fairly humid in the room).

A friend suggested I prime the walls with weldcrete, and then mix structo-lite and portland cement for parging. Is there anything else I should consider?

The room is pretty small so I’m trying to avoid full blown studs/drywall.

Concrete walls do exist, although not really in brownstones. Such a wall could be plastered with a gypsum or lime plaster system, with lime being far superior in a moist environment, but rarely used today. Structo-lite is gypsum. The difference being that lime is essentially the base of cement, whereas gypsum is a another calcium mineral that is much more soluble in water. When gypsum gets wet it softens and changes shape. If it contains any organic material a gypsum plaster can support mold due to it’s neutral pH. The truth is, pure gypsum plaster has largely not been put to the test, because lime plaster, with some small amount gypsum sometimes added to speed set up, was used for for millennia. In a dry environment, gypsum should hold up well enough to be as good as drywall, which is made of gypsum. However it is clearly much softer and less durable. Try cutting lime plaster with a jab saw.

you might also want to check what the moisture content of the walls themselves before you think that the high humidity will be a problem. I do leak tracing inside buildings. when i am looking at a wall that i consider “normal” i use a moisture meter and get readings in the range of 11- 13% moisture content. when we are dealing with a rh of around 50%, that is what we get (i do not know for sure, i do not carry a hydrometer with me). some times a little lower (10%) and sometimes a little higher (14%). when we locate the area of a leak in a ceiling or wall, we often see it rise. i would not necessarily think 15% is a problem but when we see 17%, i am thinking “something is going on” and as that moves to 20% i think “there is a problem here” (and right where leaks are we hit like 34-40% mc). you might wish to buy a bi pin moisture meter and put it to the walls you currently have and maybe place a piece of drywall down there and let it sit for a few months (well into the humid period) and let it acclimate and then hit it with the bi pin meter and see what happe ns. if you are returning results below 14% you might be ok to finish them in plaster or rock. i would venture to say that if your walls or a test piece of rock hit over 20% mc you have a humidity problem and have to address that before you do anything to the walls. going over 20 MC on wood is a problem because of wdo (wood destroying organisms).

i am available for consultation but it may not be worth it to bring me over just for something like this. i would rather see if i can get you to figure it out on your own. Lately, others have had me come to their houses to do roof inspections (and some roof leak tracing) and have asked me to look at a few other things while i am at it and so far it seems to have worked out.

Also, know if your humidity is that high that you have to worry about it, then know that you can run into other problems. For instance, if this space is near or below groundlevel, constant high humidity (like near 70%) could be enough for termites to thrive. If this is the case, i would say you have to address the humidity first.

I just reread your post. What is really humid? 90%? I suppose that could be an issue. I would figure what the humidity is in that space with a hydrometer and call the manufacturers of the drywall mud or plaster you wish to use and ask them what humidity level will hurt it. It may not be that the product fails but that it gets moldy. This sort of info is on the ‘net as well, i am sure.

If the humidity is a real problem, they do have exterior drywall products now. Look at densglass gold. I have never used this product and only just learned about it. It might be worth a look.

You can also laminate drywall directly to a brick or concrete wall without firring it out. And believe it or not, drywall compound can bond these really well. But they make adhesives for this purpose and these adhesives are thick, so they will take up some gaps in uneveness of the wall. Better off using 5/8 drywall in case the substrate is uneven, it will be less likely to bend.

I did this years ago on a red brick wall and it was so uneven, i had to grind down some high spots. We would not have thought of plastering over that brick. The idea of plastering walls comes from a place where people want to really match the look and feel of plaster. If you want that, the drywall can be skim coated.
