I need advice on replacing this old junction box. It’s in the basement ceiling. Once the box is replaced, I’ll put a small pull chain light fixture. My concern is connecting new wiring to the old wiring. The old wire is thick copper. I also know where the circuit breaker is for this unit. Ok, first there are no real electricians writing here. I have done electrical work at times but it is wrong for someone like me who is not an electrician to tell someone what to do on this board and if i were an electrician it would still be wrong. But i will tell you what i know. Also, we had an older box in my house with old wire in it and i had an electrician i know come deal with it. I will tell you what he did.

The white wire which should be the neutral looks newer (modern). The old cloth coated wire is going to be the problem. Under the cloth will probably be hard, dried rubber. If you start handling that it will crack and fall off. This is what my electrician did: he pulled the box out and let the old insulation crumble and break and cut it back to a safe place and installed the box and wire and then slipped on heat shrink wiring insulation. Hd sells it and it is in different diameters so you can cover some of the old stuff and double it on itself. (I stood there and watched him do this).

Be careful. The first time i messed with this kind of w ire it just kept crumbling. The time i called the electrician was the second time. That box looks like it was done by amateurs anyway so you might not be able to trust any of the work in that house. I’d say if you have no experience, have an electrician look at it.

Some of the old wiring insulation has asbestos in it though i have no idea what that looks like.

Electric work is for electricians or people with training (i have training).

Perfect advice. Thank you. I thought this might be a job I could do, but, probably not. Looks simple, but having that wire crumble is probably not a good thing. Thank you.
