Replacing double entry doors

there is a place that makes them for a lot less money for like 2800 a door, upstate. i called them and the quality is good. i usually do not send people outside of the city for stuff but i also think 20k for a unit is too much for some of us.

i do have this pair of doors here in my storage that i will make a decision on in a few months. if i have no need for them i will let them go on this board for cheap. op, you are always welcome to contact me.

I’m aiming to restore the facade of my small frame house in the south Slope to something like its original look (replacing the vinyl siding with Hardie, adding back a cornice etc). At some point the double entry doors were removed and replaced with an ugly plain door, now rotting. I’ve searched this forum for a source for this type of doors but haven’t found anything. I don’t need a true 19th-century replica, just something that approximates the old style, maybe like in this photo. There is a listing down below for someone selling two pairs of doors. And they are tall like yours.

I have two pair of tall doors in my storage unit as well and i have kept them in case a customer needs them. I am not sure what i am going to do with them if i do not use them – donate them to charity or sell them cheap?

Anytime you buy used 100 plus year old doors, you are looking at a rebuild. So for your job and depending on work to the frame, you could easily exceed 10,000$ for nice doors with detail or a little less for simple doors, minimal frame work. New doors, nicer, could hit 12k for simple ones with minimal frame work or say 25k for nice ones with a frame.

Paint grade versus stain grade impacts these prices.

The doors i have here and the doors the other person has listed all appear to be pine which means paint grade. Your house is more suited to paint grade.

There are door makers in the city. I used to make them. But pricey. If you want that route, come back here and ask for names.

Also, down near you there is an outfit selling imported doors. They are fancy and would cost a fortune if they were real quality doors made out of proper staves. They are not properly made and every year i get called to work on them by someone who basically bought a pig with lipstick on it and people quickly learn that if these crap doors are not maintained, they are also not worth repairing. A cheap door is ok if you don’t mind replacing it if something goes wrong. To put this in perspective, a fancy door with mahogany finish on it (not even mahogany facing) costs 5k. Unknown asian woods. For that you are better off keeping what you have or going to hd and buying 800$ jeldwin foors. Be ware of garbage.

By the way. Someone brought a flat slab door here. A 1980s door a few months back. For not a lot of money, i enlarged the glass and added some nice moldings and refinished it. Was it a 19th century door? No. Never will be. But it was an inexpensive solution that might even be better than the junk these fraudsters are selling unsuspecting customers. Painting yours will help hide what it is.

If you want to see how a proper stave door is built, google “door staves, georgia”. You will find a great website from people who make staves. That is how the brownstone era doors are made and that is the way this should be done today.

Do you still have the original surround or will you be building a new surround? There are specialty woodworkers in Brooklyn who will copy historic double doors and install them. It runs about $10k to $12K and up, depending on the wood species. Figure more if the doors are arched at the top. If you find a pair of salvage antique doors that fit your opening within an inch or so, refurbishing and installing those is likely to be quite a bit cheaper, although still pricey. You an also find doors like the ones you pictured that are made to measure to fit your opening. I am not familiar with the sources, but Brownstone Boys has written about these types of doors, as has the Brownstoner commenter Dave in Bed Stuy, and also you can find makers in Old House Journal. Another option is if you see ones you like around Brooklyn, ring the bell and ask the owners for recommendations. so those doors in the photo. they do not look like traditionally made doors with styles and rails made out of staves. those look like a “flush” door or a “slab” with windows cut in them. i am sure a place like dykes can order them, very possibly with the glass in them. Home Depot carries the smaller, flat slabs with no glass in the 80″ size. i am not sure if HD can order the tall ones. these places may be able to order them as prehung units with the frames.

Here is the thing about what you are seeing in the photo. they used to be made in the good old USA. They are really interior doors. they are not solid wood but are made up of what appears to be wood waste product mixed with glue. they slap solid edges on them and face them in oak or luan veneer. the problem with them is that they are interior and the glues and thin veneers will come undone if they are not completely sealed and if that seal is not maintained.

i get calls about once a year from people who buy these and put them on modern houses and then have problems with them. it is possible to reveneer them (the one i mention above, i reveneered that one with oak) but that is a pain in the neck for something that we should expect to last, even if a little finish scratches off.

someone called me on eastern long island four years back and i looked at the door and called the manufacturer and tried to find out where these came from. they had charged him a lot of money for what was really garbage. i think they are importing them from china. I mean this when i say it: china manufactures better balloons than they do doors.

if you are taking a long view on your home, i would stay away from anything that is not built like a door in the traditional sense.

If you’re building a new surround, it probably makes it easier to use a somewhat more off the shelf (possibly to your custom measurements) double entry door rather than a completely custom historic replica of whatever was there before.
