Hi there,

I have four exterior front windows (three are bay windows with curved glass) that need reglazing and exterior painting. Any recommendations for contractors?

I don’t have a specific recommendation unless you’re in PLG (but I know you’re not because we don’t have any houses with curved glass). Anyway I don’t think you need a contractor. Ask your neighbors about a good handyman.

Curved windows are insanely expensive and a handyman might break them if trying to get old putty out. If it were my house, I would talk to some window restoration experts in Brooklyn. (A glass repair shop might also be able to handle but they might not be as careful and thorough and certainly would not be the right people to paint.) go with what cate says. you need someone with insurance in case glass breaks.

also, if you were to use a handyman, you really want someone with specialized training or an older person who was around pros who were still around when the older person doing the work today was younger.

if you call people, ask them on the phone before bringing them out to waste your time, what primers they would use on exterior wood and if they determine the wood to be really distressed, would they put linseed oil with mineral spirits mixed in it on it first. Even if you do not have black trim, ask them if they know where to get black glazier’s compound to see if they know what glazier’s compound is and how long they have been doing this – they discontinued the black glazier’s compound between one and two decades ago. If the person does not know what glazier’s compound is, they are not your person. on the primer for wood, ben moore discontinued their distressed wood primer during covid but you will want to hear someone who knew what that product was and laments that it is now gone but has other idea’s on what to use. ask if they are still using oil base paints outside. the stores are not allowed to tell us this per epa regs but the made for metal paints can be used on wood. they only say for metal now because of the epa. ben moore stopped shipping their super spec oil to nyc during covid because of a change in the epa regs but they were still shipping it to NJ and guys were going through the holland tunnel to buy it just inside Jersey. I called Ben Moore at the time and they said they were going to reformulate and that quarts of super spec were still legal in ny. Rustoleum metal paint can be used on wood and did not appear to get restricted due to voc’s.

asking questions like the above on the phone before they visit is how pros weed out those who claim to be painters from those who are painters. do not worry about their use or understanding of language, to learn what a painter has to know to do professional work, they have been doing this for 10 years, at least 5 of this under an experienced painter and because of this, if they are who they say they are, they would have learned how to communicate to order materials and sell jobs. by asking questions like these, you weed out a lot of problems.

also, professional painters know that preparation is the most important and most time consuming part of any paint job. non pros want to walk in, apply paint, sometimes without scraping or priming, and get paid. many of these jobs fail.
