If I want to remove a one level extension from the back of our building do I need a permit? It has no foundation and is not structural significant to the rest of our building nor is it sharing any wall with a neighbor. I’ve been told that the size matters as to whether we need one but I am not finding concrete info.

Go check the historic records at DOB to see if they have any record of it being built. If yes, then file. If no, then take it away…

Yes. It needs to be filed and you need a permit. Most likely a neighbor will complain when you are doing your demolition and you will get an ECB violation which is not a fun process to deal with.
