Remove Stairs from Parlor floor to Garden? Design Dilema

Not sure what type of problem you’re having but I had this done. Remove the staircase. Frame in the hole, then insulate, drywall put the subfloor and replace the flooring on the parlor floor. If you have existing plaster, flooring and trim work you’re trying to match up yes that’s a problem. I did add a header on the garden level when I removed the hallway adjacent to the stairs. Also, used the area underneath the stairs on the parlor level as storage (brownstone owners should know what I mean). Added about 6 ft of space on the garden level and needed storage on the parlor level. Definitely worth it’s you don’t use that staircase.

Has anyone ever removed the staircase from a brownstone? If so how much did it cost? Did it cause any structural problems in the house? Does anyone recommend doing this? I am having a space issue with the garden apt in the brownstone that I just purchased and my architects are having challenges trying to solve it so I’d rather seek out other advice to come up with a so I am not being charged for a design layout that I am unhappy with. Please advise
Thanks!

Staircases are not “structural” or “supportive” elements. Removing them will not cause issues if the floor that replaces them is then properly framed in. It’s all about what layout you want and what access to the garden level you do or do not want.

And access to the basement/ cellar, if you have a floor below the garden level
