We’ve had a plumber for years but his descent into alcoholism has made him completely unreliable. Reaching out to commercial services they seem to want to charge unrealistic amounts of money and replace rather than repair a simple part. Any recommendations on a good plumber.

Look locally to where you are. Look for a licensed company that has been in business for at least 10 years, hopefully longer & get local references.

Echoing resident2, it sounds like when you say “commercial services” you are shying a way from licensed (and insured) plumbers and looking for a handyman who does plumbing. You want a licensed business who carries insurance and has a dedicated team who do the work and are not only compensated for this but have all of the protections our workers deserve. All this costs $$ and guess who pays.

I once had someone call me asking “can you find me a plumber who is not a retired doctor?”

I would do what resident2 says. Very local. Find a small firm, a person and a helper. The cost of insurance possibly makes it hard to operate that way anymore.

The trades right now are in a terrible state. Finding new labor is impossible. Not difficult. It’s impossible. No one goes into the trades anymore. Aside from that, doing business in NYC, i.e. stocking trucks, manning them, and sending them around to peoples’ homes to make repairs is insanely expensive. Changing washers or making small repairs is often not profitable. Not so much in New York but largely true of companies in N. J., the plumbers’ business model is to hire young people and teach them how to sell replacement units instead of making skillful repairs. I hired and fired a guy after it became obvious her didn’t know how to do anything. In the two years he was with his prior employer he was sent to 12 company-wide seminars. 11 of them were sales seminars. 1 was technical. I’m very happy to have the guys I do. A couple of them are with me 17 & 20 years and they’re top quality plumbers. I give them a few years more before they move to Florida or Texas because that’s how everyone talks now. I don’t see this fixing itself anytime soon. Meanwhile, I’m getting more and more calls for consulting work every year because people are tired of paying for repairs in their buildings that don’t fix anything… but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

Why would people want to go into trades when so many people these days believe that paying adult human beings 20 or even 25 or 30 dollars an hour with nothing in the way of workers comp, something for retirement, sick time, paid vacation, health insurance is acceptable (in nyc)? People openly support this on this board: it is ok to strip away all of the progressive era worker protections and take us back to a pretty bad time in our history. It is frightening when educated people begin to think this is ok and that it is ok to commit racial discimination in the process. I would not dare tell my son to go into a trade and i warn him against it. There is no value placed on people who work with their hands. We are moving backwards in this country.

And i am not saying master plumber is guilty of propagating this system. But so many people are guilty of it that every time someone like master plumber retires we lose a company that plays by the rules and it is replaced by someone who does not believe in responsibilty to their employees or by someone who is willing to work for that 19th century doctrine “if you don’t like the contract, don’t take the job”. That is where we are fast headed – the 19th century.

Master Plvmber…. I think the whole Trade Industry feels your frustration; especially the guys from the Old School who have been doing it for decades.
You sound like you need to sell that “headache”, get a consulting position in a Growing Company trying to change the industry and spend a majority of your day hanging out by the pool or beach. I think you and the rest of those Smart as a Scientist Old School guys deserve it!!

Remember that “Simple Repairs” are heavy liability for companies: they present the lowest level of success regardless of how component the mechanic is.
That being said: an honest company should offer you every option under the sun concerning your issues. From Simple Repairs to Complete System Replacements, they should allow you as the consumer to decide what is best for yourself and your home.
My advice: use Google and reviews from other people in your position. My father always taught me: If it looks like a Duck, walks like a Duck and quacks like a Duck….it isn’t a Lion. Same thing is said with companies with a ton or good reviews and little or bad reviews.

I’ve had good luck with Parkset Plumbing and Belsito Plumbing. I’m not saying it will be especially cheap. If it’s a simple repair you could try your own hands and YouTube.

Mdr and others, read op’s post carefully. The language suggests that op does not want to hire a licensed and insured company ( a “commercial” firm). They want a “handyman”. The problem is, not many talented handy people exist anymore: most of the work requires knowledge, an hic license (even if this job does not) and insurance: the handyman has become a “commercial” firm; its not that people want to become that, they have to to comply with the law.

Op, it is legal for any one of us (including you) to change a faucet or toilet flush valve, but without saying more as to what you are doing, people on this board have no idea who to recommend. If you are trying to add a bathroom where none had existed before or need a gas line for a dryer moved, you require a licensed and insured plumber.
