Recommendations for Cornice Re-Painting?

FWIW, when we paint the old ironwork fences and gates, the best approach has been to chip off all the old flaking paint first, then prepare the surface by painting it with an oil based primer made for metal (it’s rusty colored). Then apply two coats of black oil based paint made for metal on top of the primer, allowing sufficient drying time for all the steps and making sure to do it in the appropriate weather (dry and moderate temperatures).

We have an 18-foot metal cornice, which is in great shape but got finished with the wrong paint by the original GC about 6 years ago.

The paint is peeling, so we need it STRIPPED and RE-PAINTED with proper base- and top coats.

Looking for a licensed/insured exterior painter to access with a boom (no scaffolding). Hope anybody with first-hand experience can chime in.

Certainly this will take more than one day. Stripping one day at least. Are you using oil or latex? That will affect the drying time. The most important thing is proper preparation, painting in the proper weather conditions, and allowing the correct drying time between all these steps. Otherwise the cornice will peel again.

I am not sure stripping is needed, but it might be the best course of action? Does scraping work well enough? The original paint job appears to miss the base coat entirely, so too much residual paint might compromise the new paint job.

Regarding paints: I thought Rustoleum oil-based enamel paint would be most durable, but one professional who is painting Brownstones for a living swears by Benjamin Moore’s AURA satin finish exterior latex paint (water-based). Would love to hear any recommendations from home owners … all we care about is 1) long lasting and 2) matte black

In my experience, it is best to use a separate primer for the base coat for exterior painting. For this reason, I do not care for BM Aura for exterior use. It definitely peels within a few months to a year when used on exterior wood doors. Doors of course obviously experience plenty of movement due to weather conditions, and the movement pops off the paint and makes it peel.
