Recommendation: Sam Chiu for HVAC repair

Just because there is no licensing does not mean it is the Wild West either; it just leaves the opportunity for scheme-artists to easily get in and extort the system.

On the basis of previous B’stoner recommendations, I hired Sam to do maintenance/repair work on our Mitsubishi ducted minisplit system and he was great: professional, extremely easy to reach and communicate with, reasonable rates (actually less than half the Mitsubishi ‘Diamond’ HVAC company I tried previously), and excellent service. I also asked him for a quote on installing the hyper-heat equipment — necessary when the system is primary heat — and it was significantly lower than that from the Diamond company. (Our idiot contractor, about whom I have posted before, installed the wrong equipment, which basically freezes and shuts down during cold snaps.) It’s hard finding good, honest service providers in Brooklyn and Sam’s definitely one of them!

I’ve had a different experience with Sam although I requested a new install. He said he was far too busy to take on anymore work and it took me many calls to get a response.

@StuyHeights., thanks for sharing. I guess I won’t be calling him now. I’ve also observed that as people get busy they aren’t prepared for scaling their business and the quality tends to go down.

Always remember to thoroughly vet HVAC companies; there are no licenses required for the work (besides an EPA to purchase coolant but my niece could pass that test) so it can be murky waters.
That being said there are a multitude of great companies, but the hotter the weather the more likely a small shop may be too busy.

Thanks Chris. Sage advice – I remember that bit about licenses . I guess one could ask if they have an HVAC certification but none of the certifications seem particularly rigorous (to your earlier point).
