Recessed Juliet balcony on 2nd floor -allowed?

I think the code issue here is not that you can’t have a balcony below the minimum height, but that you can’t have an open porch (deck) above that height. It’s kind of like “below the 2nd story it’s a porch, at or above it’s a balcony”. It may be that you can get it approved as long as you don’t call it a balcony.

My understanding is that you cannot have a traditional balcony on a 2nd floor (or under 20 feet). I am looking to do a recessed (18 inches) Juliet balcony on the second floor and wondering if it would pass code. Your responses are appreciated.

Leinad, maybe you can answer something I’ve always wondered when I see that type of short balcony…what are they typically used for? Plants? It’s too small to fit a chair, right? Or is it flush with the floor so you can have a chair half inside/half outside?

LOL–the one on my 1899 limestone is very pretty, but it’s main “function” seems to be to fill with rainwater when its drains clog forcing me to open the window in my bedroom and wade out to clear them.

chipito & BobMarvin: It seems to me that the main function would be to allow light and air into the room as it allows for full length doors to open/slide. BobMarvin, bring up an interesting point that I did not think of ..I guess if it was recessed, it would need to be slightly pitched to prevent rain water build up..

Mine is pitched, but has a limestone lip that lets a few inches of water accumulate if the copper drain pipes get clogged
