Just starting out with designing a deck on an extension (so technically a terrace) and working with a contractor who is very capable, reasonable, and helpful, but not an designer at all. So we’re trying to do most of the design work ourselves. But we’re new to decks, so question is: do most decks use railings that are custom made by an ironworks shop, or do these shops use pre-made cut to size railings that are galvanized, painted, etc, in a factory? I’m assuming both, but I’m wondering how this works, and whether there are pro’s and con’s other than cost. Our contractor was under the impression that custom made railings wouldn’t be galvanized or might rust after a while when the paint deteriorates so they might need more maintenance.

Most iron workers use wrought iron components customized to fit the particular size etc of the job. It is rare to find real old school hand hammered iron work these days and when you do it is extremely expensive. That said; yes wrought iron does rust if not painted on a regular basis.
To find an iron worker that will work with galvanized look on the coastal areas of Long Island, where it is crucial that you use galvanized because of the salt air. It does cost more than wrought iron, just because it is not commonly used and very few iron workers will take the time to do something different.
