Put mini split condenser on roof, or mount to side of building?

Hey folks, I’m considering installing some mini splits in my 1920 Ridgewood brick 2 family house. I’m looking to do it myself, and am in early stages of planning. I can pull a vacuum, I know how to operate manifold gauges, work with refrigerant, etc etc.

One thing I am wondering about is where to mount the condensers. I think the easiest way would be to put them up on the roof, but I am expecting to have to replace/recover my roof in a few years. Is having them on the roof going to be an issue, with these future repairs in mind? I was thinking you could have some extra length of hose up there, and have the condensers essentially mounted on wood skids that you can slide around during the roof job and the lag down when they are ready to be securely mounted again, but not sure if this is a good plan. Mounting them on the side of the building would work but obviously be a little more difficult to hold that heavy unit while on a ladder.

If anyone has any advice or thoughts I welcome them. Thanks!

All of these questions are pretty easily answered in the fact that when you Install or Replace a Condensor on a roof you need a full mechanical plan that is designed by an Engineer to show where it is installed is safe.
Problem is, no one really does that to Install or Replace a Condensor because you are adding an easy 6-8K on top of the project.
At least that has been my experience. If i were you:
Hire an HVAC Mechanical company and do it right.

i can tell you a guy who works with a lot of steel but i am not sure if he is a steel guy per se. Bill Laredo. he used to be on here as “restoration contractor”. he seems to use it a lot. he has been busy though. company is laredo construction. he does more heavy or structural work than i have done over the years.

Does anyone have a rec for a steel guy? We bought a wood frame four years ago that had installed central air without permits (permit-less work was extremely, extremely common in my neighborhood until about 10 years ago) . They put the two condensers on the flat roof on a mat. The idea of them falling through the roof keeps me up at night.

Can I do this without a permit? I cannot let the DOB into the house for permits, no way no how.

We are also looking to do the roof this spring. I have NO idea how the roofing guys could do this with the condensers placed the way they are.

Has anyone ever put a condenser on the ledge of a flat roof party wall? So not a shared party wall, but a wall that is 100% yours that is separate but touches another separate masonry wall. So you have a full 8 inch wall to theoretically sit condensers on.

My roof was flat, we were told no because of fire code on wood frame houses. but my architect could have been wrong.

To mount on the roof, you mount on steel beams. You don’t do that part yourself, you hire a steel guy for that.

Randolph, the problem with mounting things in your roof was probably either that your roof was sloped, or that your rafter couldn’t take the weight. Mounting HVAC equipment on the roof is very common n flat-roofed buildings everywhere.

The roof has the main advantage of keeping the condenser out of sight. However the roof is the hottest place in the summer when you need the most cooling. It is more efficient for the condenser to be in the rear yard where it is most likely cooler and the rear yard is good for maintenance access too.

I’m not an engineer.. but I would think mounting kindorfs on the deck posts (metal or wood) would be a problem for the DOB if they ever had a reason to ding you. I’d stick to a separate system of poles cemented into the ground….

Mounting condensers in the backyard: Think about metal fence poles cemented into the ground aprox 3 feet and exposed 5 feet above ground straddled by removable/remountable KINDORF channels to hold STANDARD condensers.

Much more flexible than welding anything together.

I’m in the same boat. I’m going to install the condensers in the backyard right after the deck. Easy access, easy install etc. I’m going to weld stands for them to keep them above the snow line. No house vibration from a wall mount. And the lineset, comms wires can be hidden under the deck.

I’ve got all my lineset run from the 3rd, 2nd, & 1st floor apartments into the basement. From there I’m going to flare union them into the backyard.

I’ve seen gut renovation construction in brooklyn 3-families do a roof install. They installed i-beams on the roof and mounted to them. That renovation job was by the books. DOB inspections,etc.

roof mounting needs steel dunnage as others have said and also FDNY needs a metal mini ladder over the dunnage to be sure they have access to full roof.

I’ve noticed a few houses on my block have the condensers mounted on the side of the building, above the party driveway. Seemed like a reasonable place to do it.
