Property Tax increased almost 100%! Why?

I recently completed a Reno on a single family house in bk. Just got my property tax bill and it went from roughly 5800 per year to over 10k! There are no other homes in the neighborhood that have taxes remotely close to this. In fact, the exact same house across the street has a higher assessed value and is identical but there taxes are less than 4K. I figured the Reno would have some sort of impact on the taxes but nothing remotely close to this. Anyone on here wth similar experiences? I am thinking after some research this might be in error but I will likely have to get a lawyer or certiary involved to remedy.

Same issue PLG. Original assessment came in January which was in line with previous year. Got the bill in June which was similar increase from 5800 to over 10k after doing some minor renovations. Opened a case with DOF and no word at all from them. I also did not get the letter they supposedly sent in February with the proposed chnage, which gives you only 2 weeks to respond. Happened to another home on the block that also had permitted work done. need to follow up some more so just paid it in the meantime.

Those lawyers are expensive & very picky about taking the work unless it involves major bucks. If you can pay now & then apply for reduction in next tax year when there are standard methods for doing so (which would take until next August to resolve), you’d get a retroactive reduction for what you’d overpaid (if they do reduce it.) I don’t know how effective it would be to try doing it now but wouldn’t hurt. Go on line for a Request for Review (RFR) from Dept. of Finance & get TC forms from Tax Commission.
