Proper mortar/restoration of a pre 1920 brick facade

Whenever you are working on a historic facade of any kind you need a craftsman that specializes in what you have, to maintain the value of it and not allow it to be vandalized by contractors that try to do everything, but nothing properly.
And if you are in a Landmark district, the landmarks commission will insist on it.
There are many that advertise on this site, call 2 or 3 of them and listen to what they have to say.

Does another have experience with the proper mortar and technique for the pointing /restoration
of a brick facade of this era? I have read that since the bricks are of a higher fire type and also stronger (very thin mortar lines) that you have to have someone who truly knows what they are doing with the proper materials, to do a proper restoration, otherwise you can ruin the structural integrity of your building.
