Possible bedbug situation

Our tenants upstairs think they may have bedbugs. They saw three small, reddish brown flat bugs in the bathroom, one crawled behind the light switch, and possibly saw one in a bedroom. But so far none seen in mattresses, suitcase, etc. And no one has any bites. So, this doesn’t really sound like bedbugs, but they seem convinced this is what they saw. My limited research seems to indicate that bedbug exterminators are different from general exterminators. How best to identify and proceed, and does any one have any recommendations for exterminators? Thanks for any input, relatively new at this.

I recommend not using an exterminator to do the inspection in order to prevent conflict of interest at your expense. Mike of K9 Technologies (516) 405-1497 does a great inspection and has lots of helpful info and advice to provide

We sometimes see round red tiny bugs in the bathroom. They are a harmless beetle called a spider beetle. As for bed bug specialists, I cannot recommend companies because I work for Brownstoner but we did have bed bugs once and got a specialist recommended by a friend. For $100 (or $300? Can’t recall) they’d come out to inspect to tell you if you had them. If you did, then after treatment they placed a monitor for a few weeks. No dogs.

Thank you both for responding. I got a hold of Boot a Pest, some one on here recommended them highly. Seems that it probably isn’t bedbugs, thankfully! On to finding a regular exterminator.

Years ago we used M&M pest control both for detections using trained dogs, and for eradication. I found them very trustworthy, and their treatment was successful. (if you need treatment don’t bother with any of the non-toxic treatments, they don’t work. Except for heating the whole apartment, but that should be done by professionals and it’s significantly more expensive)

Sadly I can’t remember the exact service I used, but… i had a tenant who had bedbugs one time and was one of those people scarred by the experience to point of having real paranoia about re-infestation. A couple of times when she thought she saw evidence of bugs, I hired a service that used dogs to sniff out bugs and eggs. It didn’t cost that much and gave piece of mind (no bugs either time). I am sure you could probably find them via google.
