Pocket doors repair
I’m looking for a handyman who can repair some stuck pocket doors in my parents house. At the very least, they seem to have come off the track, but there may be some hardware needed. The rail/track itself seems to be in good condition.

Mopar, first you reply with the painfully obvious answer, and now a very vague follow up. Not very helpful in either case, and makes me wonder why you even bother. Thanks anyways.

Well, yes, but he would need more work than just one set of pocket doors.

Steve – there’s definitely a market! Mopar – any suggestions on one? I can of course pick one from the yellow pages, or even the vendors area here, but prefer hearing from people who have actually done business with a particular service before makign a decision. Have had to spend way too much money in the past having work fixed or redone, when the original contractor proved to be unreliable.

Call some finish carpenters in Brooklyn who work in old houses. They know how to fix pocket doors.

GC, I have been trying to find the time to service pocket doors for people. I have list as long as my arm of people who need work done on these and one of those folks even directed me to a place that sells the parts – rollers and track. I just cannot make the time to take care of these. Maybe sometime in the future I will start to stock the parts and will make this part of my core business as the demand is there. Steve

Can’t help you with the handyman, pocket door issue, but I’m very impressed with your imploding cooling tower avatar.

Hi, and thanks for the site! great information. If he ever does make it back down to NY he’s got a customer lol. I’ve gone through most of the steps for troubleshooting, and i did manage to get one “mostly” working a few years ago, but it’s a floor dragger now, and doesn’t come out all the way. The other is hopelessly stuck, and beyond my abilities to fix or troubleshoot. And so, still looking for someone who can fix this (preferably without opening the walls – if it comes to that, i can very well do it myself.. the trick of this specialization seems to be extracting the doors from the pocket without popping open the plaster) Very good info on that site though – i might take a second look with fresh eyes next time i’m over at my parents’.

Ours were working fine until a rewiring project cluttered up the interior spaces with debris. I found a lot of good info on fixpocketdoors.com (really!) and was able to get ours roughly in shape using that. I’m hoping to persuade that site’s guy–a real devotee of pocket doors, to say the least– to stop by next time he makes a trip to NYC. If you find anyone in the nabe who does this kind of thing, I’d love to know about it.
