Pocket Door repair

We have a set of pocket doors, only one of which is fully operational and sliding on its track. The other one has a partially missing track and can therefore not slide all the way.
Our contractor is talking about forgetting about the track and hanging the doors instead, as he thinks the track will be hard to find.
Anyone out there have an opinion of how hard it would be to fix the track versus hanging the doors (which really seems like a pain to me)? Is there a place to buy vintage pocket door track?

Nowadays new pocket doors are hung from the top but I don’t think it will be easy or successful to alter old pocket doors to hang from the top. For one thing, you would have to open up the walls, and possibly the doors won’t be the right size. Unfortunately, I don’t know exactly where to find the track but I know it is available somewhere. There are carpenters here in Brooklyn who know how to repair pocket doors. Bob Marvin on this forum may also know where to get the track. Or you may be able to make a bit of track. The Old House Journal Guide to Restoration book (1992 edition) has several suggestions. Make an ad hoc track. Drill holes down the center of flat stock (mild steel). Using a steel rod that matches the diameter of the groove in the rollers, tackweld the rod onto the flat plate from behind, through the holes. Drill countersunk screw holes into the edges for installation on the floor. They also suggest three companies that carry modern pocket door hardware and can locate obsolete hardware: Barry Supply Company on West 17th Street in Manhattan, Liz’s Antique Hardware in LA, and National Manufacturing Co. in Sterling, Ill. The latter is closed but the others are still in business.
