Hey
Any recommendations for a plumber or recommendations to help us stop flooding.

We have brownstone in park slope, basement keeps flooding from storm water, we have check valve so it’s coming from our own gutters and rain runoff not being able to make it through to the overwhelmed city sewer.

Any ideas

I had a client hire me to design a system to deal with this…but I think what I designed then might be illegal now. I devised a system that closed a check valve when the sewers were becoming overwhelmed which kept the water from backing into the home. Then the water used inside the home would spill over into two small holding tanks, basically large buckets buried in the ground and covered, then that collected water was pumped out by strong sump pumps into a tee fitting on the street side of the closed check valve.

To sum it up, during a heavy rain, we closed off and isolated the home from the city sewer. We then redirected the water the residents were using in to pits where pumps forced it all back into the sewer pipes in the street, again the home being protected by the closed check valve. It worked beyond our best expectations and the 2-family building was able to keep their $12,000/month garden apartment tenant who’d previously gotten flooded at every big rain storm.

Hi MP or anyone else, can you recommend a specific brand/model pump that’s powerful enough to pump water approx. 6ft up., thru a hose placed in small cellar window, and deep into the backyard. It would only be used the one or two times a year we get torrential rains like last night. I have a drywell but that’s not enough during storms like last night.

That is weird to comprehend because you would normally put the Check Valve on the Street Side of the House Trap or else you would comprise the House Trap and Plugs during the rain.
So if you pump the water on the Street Side of the Check Valve you are pumping it to the Street Side of the Trap which they do not allow.
Right?

In the middle of our backyard we have a large gravel oval (approx. 12′ wide & 25′ wide). There’s about 8″ of sand beneath the 4″ of gravel. It acts as a dry well when we have heavy rain. Possibly a solution for your groundwater issues. Doesn’t address water in your gutters, of course. Good luck!
