Much as I detest the spandex-and-helmeted entitled bikers, banning them from a major throughfare is not the answer. I say go for clearly marked, separated lanes, and chicanes every few hundred feet to slow the maniacs down(hill). I’m speaking as a biker who probably never exceeds 10mph on public streets.

Agree with barbiduleny and bored at work. I used to ride the Brooklyn Bridge as a commuting biker for several years until I moved and now use the Williamsburg. As a cyclist I will be the first to admit that many cyclists are aggressive and ride waaayyy too fast on this bridge. However, as noted above it is a poorly set up shared space and I am happy to hear that steps are being made to correct it (hopefully). I can only speak for myself, but I think it is important to remember that this is one of the most iconic bridges in the world and attracts so many tourists who certainly are not looking at a painted line. So I think for now, it is up to us, who use the bridge regularly, to be more careful and responsible as locals as we ride until it is properly corrected…and NOT by banning cyclists.

I know it can be annoying to share the road but I bike on the Brooklyn Bridge sometimes and would hate to lose it. It’s one of the few real challenges in the city (that isn’t just about avoiding traffic!)

Agree that the setup on the Brooklyn bridge is really bad and dangerous for both pedestrians and bike riders.
You are quite disingenuous though in making this a ‘bike’ problem and claiming that bikes encroach in the pedestrian lane. Given the crowds, it’s just physically impossible. What happens regularly however is tourists forgetting about the bikes and spilling into the bike lane (not blaming them, the lanes are not properly separated and it gets really crowded).
So NO you won’t get my support, and neither would a petition that proposed banning pedestrians from the brooklyn bridge…

Hey @vera what a terrible idea. Maybe you should pay attention to the news and would know that DOT is looking at expanding the pedestrian/bike path on the Brooklyn Bridge to safely accommodate more pedestrians and cyclists. According to DOT more than 10,000 pedestrians and 3500 cyclists use the bridge on an average weekday. Where do you suggest those cyclists go? As others have noted, many use the bridge to get to work. Everyone has a right to use the bridge, and everyone should be respectful. Banning one group is not the answer.

Go get your 100 signatures and then drop the petition in the trash.

What is needed is more bridges & tunnels; no other major City in the world with major rivers running through them (just about all!) have so few bridges…… Over adrenalized bikers do take way too much of the limited space.

Bikers can just take the Manhattan Bridge over the river. It’s not far from the Brooklyn at all and provides an unparalleled riding experience, free of pesky pedestrians, with a dedicated bike crossing!

Yes! As between pedestrian, cars and bikes, bike riders are the least considerate and most obnoxious group in the city. Can we expand this ban to all bikes in NYC?

No way! For several years I enjoyed biking to work over the bridge. Yes it’s crowded but bikes have a right to use the bridge. Pedestrians can protect themselves by staying out of the bike lane.
