Plaster medalion repair or replacement

This will shock anyone who thinks I’m a purist, but polyurethane medallions, available in my sizes C and styles on Amazon, look just fine once installed and painted. I used one to replace a badly damaged medallion in my parlor floor hallway. You’d never know.

While an exact reproduction of your original medallion would be ideal, there are companies who sell different patterns off the shelf, so to speak. Try Felber Ornamental and Decorator’s Supply Corporation.

We used Aidan and his crew from European plastering, who made and installed a new ornate plaster molding after it fell down in our parlor ,they also made a wall/ ceiling molding that was salvaged during demolition in a house on our street.

We had a leak from an upstairs laundryroom that collapsed a good part of the plaster ceiling and original horsehair medallion on the parlor floor. After a lot of research, we settled on a light-weight plaster replacement that was shipped to us from a vendor in California. We looked at plastic versions but could not find one that matched the original and was large enough to not be swallowed by the room.

I was originally considering buying a medallion from this place: but these medallions are kind of large. All the same if any of their designs work for you, they are real plaster and the price well below custom work.

I was watching someone on TV making a medallion and they attach them to the ceiling with glue. I would think you ought to put a couple of screws into it too. There are special screws used for installing stuff into plaster.

I have also heard of people using those plastic medallions as molds forcasting medallions in plaster. Again, no experience with that.
