so, we’re dealing with a persistent mouse situation, and have seen a rat or two in ours/neighbors back yards over the summer. we’ve had exterminators come, and they’ve been great at sealing interior holes in walls and baseboards – but they really need us to make sure our house is sealed from the outside to avoid them getting in in the first place. any suggestions of a super thorough handyman/contractor to do such a job? are there specialists in such things?

When we had a cat, we had no issues. She knew where they came in in the basement and sat there every night waiting. She died at start of covid and its been nothing but a battle with the mice ever since. We are contemplating a cat and a neighbor has offered to loan us one. You can foster a cat from some pet adoption places.

You can also walk around the exterior and find holes yourself by probing with a small screwdriver and seal them temporarily with steel wool before you bring in the handymen/exterminator to seal them permanently. Take special care in the rear mudroom/shed if there is one: Creatures can be coming in where the wall meets the floor, including via the adjacent property you can’t see, and behind pipes. Did they already seal holes in the cellar and check the attic? Also, rodents can travel inside the walls from row house to row house and it’s pretty hard to stop that.

Don’t believe its possible to locate and seal every hole particularly in a brownstone house
