Permit needed for pergola on roof if you can't see it from street?

If this is a multiple dwelling, you cannot use wood (combustible) on such a structure. It would have to be steel/metal.

Hi, we have a patio deck on the roof of a brownstone. Its in a recently landmarked section of the UWS. The rear deck is not visible at all from the street. From prior experience attending their mtgs, the architecture review board seems to only care about things that are visible from the street. Any idea what we’d need to do if we were to put up a small pergola? The patio’s already built out and this would replace an umbrella that’s been there for years. (our building coop is OK with it) Thx!

Visibility of a pergola is not usually a problem with LPC (furniture for training vines). You still need a Certificate of no effect however. The board are ok with installing a pergola anchored to structure and not filing it?

A pergola on a roof must be able to withstand a 100 mph wind. The DOB requires the legs to be incombustible as well the top angle-headers to carry a detachable wooden canopy, subsequently a job for a professional iron-worker and
carpenter DUO.

Thanks. I’ll do some more research. Maybe contact these guys: http://nyroofscapes.com BTW I have never seen them where the legs are incombustible or the canopy is detachable. If that’s the rules, no one’s obeying them.

What are the rules if I just put up a few vertical 4×4’s, about 8 ft high, that I can attach a sub screen to? It would easy to do and very strong utilizing the mounts that already exist for a wood railing that goes around the deck. Thx!

You need both a DOB and LPC permit. If the pergola is visible, it will require a public hearing at LPC.

Not visible from any street. Only visible to buildings from the back that are higher. So how does anyone even put up an umbrella these days? Some are huge and practically constitute a permanent structure. Thx!

If you file with the DOB you will have to file with Landmarks – even if its not visible from the street – which you have to prove to them with drawings and possibly a mock up.
I doubt that the supports for a wood railing is capable of safely supporting a pergola, particularly of the canopy is infilled with vines. You should followup on you’re thought to contact that rooftop garden installer with experience in dealing with this type of installation.
