Partial removal of chimney

Has anyone removed a lower half of a chimney stack but kept the upper portion with some kind of support and has a story to share or advise from their experience?

Suggest you consult a structural engineer.
We removed our central fireplace (but refurbished front and rear chimneys) and removed the associated lower floor brick ‘chimney bust’ which was cosmetic, not structural – ie not supported by brick base extending down into cellar / basement – our front and rear chimneys busts did go from cellar to top floor. After removing front bust (front layer of floor to ceiling protruding bricks) we bricked in the remaining chimney stack so solid brick and plastered over for a smooth flat wall finish. The upper chimney column is now supported by solid brick base. There were not ever any upper floor fireplaces associated w this chimney.
The front and rear chimneys have been refurbished as working fireplaces. Center of house we reclaimed 4 inches of wall.
