Pantry Design and Installation Recommendation

I agree with Cate. We found mouse droppings in our pantry closet. When we emptied it out in preparation for plastering? painting and adding additional shelves I found a mouse hole gnawed in the baseboard where a crate had been standing. I stuffed it with coarse steel wool with wood putty on top. We also covered the painted subfloor with vinyl plank flooring. Five months later there’s no evidence of mice.

Hi, I have a closet near my kitchen that I’d like to turn into a pantry. I’d like to hire someone with experience to consult a bit on how to make it functional and then purchase the materials and do the installation. New doors and a shelving system will need to be installed for it, at a minimum. I have zero idea on how much something like this can cost or where to find a good person to do this work.

Anyone have recommendations? Thanks!

Given the nature of your post, it sounds like what you need is an interior designer to make the design, and a carpenter to install it. You could hire just the carpenter, if they are decent. I might look at companies that make cabinets, but if you really want something fancy get a designer who can make drawings. For me, this would be a DIY project for both design and installation, but it’s clear you’re looking to get a really nicely designed setup, and a professional installation, so it’s all about how you want to do it. There’s no permits required, nor serious trade work, so don’t hire an architect or contractor in my opinion.

You can also google pantry design and figure it out. There’s lots of info online about types of storage, heights of shelves etc. I researched it and had a carpenter install the shelves. If you go with Container store, for example, they can help you design and install provided the closet itself is not changing. A lot of closet companies will also design pantries.

If this is a rear garden level kitchen in a townhouse, the closet near the kitchen may well have been the intended pantry. My two cents, make sure to prepare the space before installation by sealing up any cracks, especially along the baseboards and around electrical points, and painting in advance. You don’t want mice and roaches penetrating, and once the shelves are in, it becomes more difficult to do any of these things. I would design built-ins so I still have access to the baseboard area, if possible. I once lived in an apartment in whose kitchen a standard run of cabinets had been installed on top of a crumbling wall. There was a small gap on the side where the cabinets didn’t quite reach the wall. The gap wasn’t big enough that we could reach the wall behind it, but it was big enough to admit mice all day and night.
