Panel of glass replaced and door painted

cate’s answer is the short answer for people working in a simpler time when one trade did one thing and the other did the other. what she is saying is still correct with the exception that in places like brooklyn with old housing stock and people willing to fix those houses up, we have individuals doing actual restoration work and they know as much about the paint, glass, and woodwork as someone who focuses on just one of those. OP, that may be who you are looking for and if so that is great. but it will cost a bit to get someone who can do all three right (we are not talking about a “handyman” or jack of all trades here but a restoration person; someone who studies those individual trades and brings them together with the skill of the individual tradespeople; it gets pricey). you have options, but to what cate said, no you cannot ask a glass person to paint but you might be able to ask a very good painter to change the glass.

the problem with glass is it has to be transported and carried a certain way (up right) or it cracks (laminated cracks, tempered or plain sheet breaks). some of us learn that the hard way. and people who have never measured glass, have a tendency to cut it a bit too tight.

also, if that upper frame needs restoration, i would wait on the glass. the glass should be next and then the painting because the painter may have to do some some caulking around the glass or on the inside they may have to nail holes or damage to old trim. when we do doors, we paint and then install the glass and then paint again on site, filling and covering nail holes.

One of the panels of glass on my double entry doors was broken by a previous tenant. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced company that can both replace the glass and repaint the doors? They are not the ornate type of glass or doors you see on many brownstones. Just pretty basic. Also the frame of the arched window above the doors may need to be restored or replaced as well as that has deteriorated quite a bit.

you are talking about three different trades here. if you try to get someone to work on all three, this is going to cost a bundle because that person is a highly skilled tradesperson charging what a tradesperson paying into the system has to charge in this city: about $100 an hour. most painters running around this city do not bill near that and do not have the skillset to even call themselves painters and if they cannot paint like a painter should they certainly cannot change the glass and restore the arch. many painters now do not have vehicles required to move sheets of glass.

the arch is the big unknown. a picture would help us know whether it can be restored on site or should be replaced. if it can be restored on site, a really good old school painter can probably do that on site using modern epoxies and a lot of sanding. if it needs wood replaced on site, that is a job for a woodworker. if it needs to be replaced, Vaughan at Heights Woodworking or Nate at Slope Workshop are the people to call.

as far as the glass, again, if you found a painter w ith a van who charged what it takes a tradesperson to survive here and had say more than 10 years of full time experience, that person would probably be able to change the glass.

you may wish to “break” the glass portion out of the larger project. find a glass shop to take care of the glass. there is sam the glazier and another shop on Church st, Major Glass. In Ridgewood there is Major Lock and Glass. you might see about having them do the glass and then focus on the painting and the arch.

no doubt you are going to wonder who i am. if you use my screen name to find me, you will see that i restore doors and yes, i change glass and paint the doors as i restore them. But i am more a wood worker and simply do not come on site and paint and rarely come on site just to change glass. i do not mind answering your questions though and for every 1 person i try to help on this site, 4 others call me asking me if i can do a job for them.

Check glass installation near you. Do not ask them to do painting. Hire a painter for that. (The painter may be able to do modest wood preparation also, depending on how far gone it is.)
