I have searched the forum and now I’m a bit confused. Our house has carpet over unpainted concrete floor. I want to rip up the carpet and paint the concrete so it feels clean under foot. Which type of paint to use? Is expoxy safe in area with little ventilation? Will it trap moisture and cause problems? We don’t have the money to tile or add flooring. Budget of approx $100 for this project. Any advice would be so appreciated.

The slab may not be insulated, which will caused paint to flake after a few years. There’s a marbleizing system sold by Lowes, which entails sprinkling two colors down randomly. It doe’s use much paint at all and ends up looking pretty good. I put it down with a Roundup weed control pump. I did 700 sf with paint left for about $60, I think.

I used that speckle stuff that I think Bessie is talking about, but didn’t add the specs. You can find it in big box stores with garage floor paint. Make sure you use a bonding primer for concrete. I did mine about 6-7 years ago and regularly hose down the basement to clean it. Only a couple of areas have chipped but for the most part, it still looks great considering!

I would just rip up the carpet and let the cement be. If you’re having problems with moisture and dirt on a cellar floor, paint will not solve these problems and will only make it worse.

thanks cate, the issue is that it feels yucky under foot and there are splotches of paint all over it. what are your thoughts on staining or the marbling others mentioned?

Def do the moisture test after you take up the carpet and scrape the carpet glue etc. You can lay plastic on the floor overnight and if it’s wet the next day you have moisture. But watch some of vids above about that. I think I painted this basement in a reno I did in Baltimore with Sherwin W Porch & floor enamel. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1310-Andre-St-Baltimore-MD-21230/36541661_zpid/?view=public (Scroll through pics to see bsmt). Maybe about $35~50 a gallon. I just walked into Sherwin W. and told them I needed to paint my bsmt and they handed me this stuff. You chose the tint. I did “Lazy Gray”. 3 coats. People say it looks great. No moisture issues though so I was lucky. I did have to smooth out the concrete first. Best of luck.
