Painter who removes layers of old paint from woodwork

Thank you @Stevecym. I appreciate the recommendation.
We just closed on a rowhouse in a landmark district in the Bronx and want to get started on stripping the paint from original features before the renovation begins.

since you are not getting replies, i will take you some of the issues for someone like me to try to do this work:

you need a paint stripper. a lot of people do not do it because it is so labor intensive that that for someone trying to make even a bare minimum living in NYC (by charging say $60 an hour plus material – that is not what they make – that is what their business charges – they will make like 30 an hour; at 60 an hour we cannot legally afford to hire an employee and give that person all of the protections of the law that someone needs to work with nasty chemicals; we would have to charge 80 an hour for just a helper; people would hear that and think we are crazy), these jobs become a fortune.

most of the people doing this are not painting contractors who are experts in their field but are often people who stand on street corners looking for work and they can charge less because they do not pay into the system and do not carry insurance and are willing to break any number of laws – including safety. and now that they have outlawed methylene chloride stripper for sale to consumers, i bet a lot of the people who were stripping wood without operating an insured company are finding it hard. the modern replacements for methylene are useless. (though there is Peel Away and we mix our own with lye but these burn the wood so cannot be stained over and clear coated, only painted).

a lot of painters also won’t do it because it is miserable work, at best. why not just paint?

the only real time i see anyone hire someone to do this is when they want to strip the paint and go back to the nice underlying wood – oak or mahogany. it becomes worth it then because there is less temptation to just rip it all out and replace it.

Stripping paint is a skill/craft by itself. Painters normally do not do it.
It is a dying skill. Quite literally (the chemicals) and also it is very labor intensive. When you do find someone it will not be a social butterfly, they are normally zenned out introverts that do not communicate well. (the chemicals)
A Guy I used a lot during the 80 & 90’s (he was brilliant) moved upstate & refuses to come back to the City for any amount of money… he is not in it for the money, he just loves “freeing the wood”…. please let us know if you find someone.

DeGamba took all my doors away and returned them beautifully stripped. He also worked on my Parlor Floor stripping the baseboard moulding and around the windows. Not cheap but worth it to me. Nothing like the old wood and his workshop allowed him to literally dip the whole door in a huge vat. Amazing to see him and his team work.

There are plenty of good wood strippers around in Brooklyn and they charge reasonable rates too. Ask around, ask your neighbors, keep asking here. Unfortunately I cannot recommend people because I work for Brownstoner.

and be aware that there is an old kind of process that looks like plaster made to look like carved wood that consists of some kind of powder (might even be talc) and linseed oil. it is formed by pressing it into a mold and letting it harden. i suspect it predates the brownstone period but we ran into it on an old building in lower manhattan and i can say that paint remover damages it. i am not sure i would put paint remover to anything that looks like it might be plaster.

It’s called composition. It’s the same thing used to make picture frames with decorative details. You sometimes find it on the line of molding that runs around under the cornice that you use to hang pictures from. And sometimes it is decorative detail applied on top of wood molding or a wood fireplace.

Composition as far as I know, is composed of fine sawdust and glue., pressed into a mold. They used it for doll heads, frames, Nativity figurines, etc. The glue used was of animal origin and like many other natural substances it can become fragile over time.. Gesso is basically plaster and glue. It can be pressed or carved and built up by hand. It is a lot stronger. It is a light yellow color.

I had a ceiling medallion stripped and replicated by Urban Plaster. It can be done but it is very costly. In our case it was one of the very few historical details left in our house.

The method used was a special product designed for plasterwork., and involved much fine detailing and picking over by hand.

This is an example of the picture rail molding Cate referred to. The gesso compo or what have you is quite thin here. Usually people sub in a pressed wood molding today, to get that look.

Thank you for the info on gesso vs. comp, that is good to know, and explains why I see yellowish decorative detail on stripped wood fireplaces that survives the stripping. On the topic of heat guns, although you will not find this written in any books that I know of, it has been my experience it is dangerous to use a heat gun at any temperature when lead paint is present. Even if an experienced operator is using the heat gun at a low temperature, the lead seems to vaporize and drift upward, making me instantly woozy if I’m on the floor above. One option might be to leave the house while this is going on (naturally) but I’m also not sure what happens to the lead after it is released into the air….does it turn back into particles and settle everywhere? So we’ve avoided heat guns on lead paint in our house, stick to the horribly noxious methyl chloride and even worse seeming denatured alcohol. Once the work is done (not by us) we don’t leave any chemicals in the house.

we are using methylene chloride on all of our work. i tend not to worry about chemicals where i am concerned as i am older, but for some reason, unless i am out doors the heat gun has always bothered me.

It’s also dangerous to use heat guns on wood that’s in place because they can ignite debris in the cavity behind the woodwork.

and all of us who have used heat guns have burnt wood at some point, bob (well maybe not you, but i have). and the danger you describe sounds as if it is something that would smolder for hours until it finds a bit more air and then it ignites.

i did my own hand rail with a heat gut and hated doing it.

Back in the ‘70s I went on a house tour In Hoboken where one of the brownstones has to be restored after a heat gun had set wainscoting on fire. That greatly impressed me and I’ve only used mine on furniture since.
