Painter needed

Hi, can anyone recommend a painter in Park Slope? I need to paint a small apartment (under 500 sq feet) before new tenant moves in. With all the coronavirus chaos, the current tenants couldn’t move out on schedule, everyone has been rearranging everything and the painter I had used before can’t do it anymore. Need your help. Thank you.

OP: i suspect their are good people out there, but with what is going on now, other b’stoners are not on here posting suggestions.

here is the problem you will face if you wish to find a freelance without some other issues: because of the downward pressure on wages at this level by the mass of cheap labor, anyone worth their salt has moved on to do other things. maybe if you were once a painter you now do wood finishing and can justify a higher price. real rlance painters who study the trade and try to do every next job better than the last are not there anymore. and even if you are ok with an ok painter, even they are getting hard to find and they are not on here.

for a trades person to support themselves responsibly in this city (and by responsibly i mean not subsidizing their pay with public assistance) they have to make $500 a day every day. that is what it takes. People do not want to pay that for a painter so what we end up with are “the issues”. (if people were paying painters 500 a day, i would paint the odd apartment here and there for a change of scenery).

unless we tolerate some of the nonsense we have to call companies. as contractor, i deal with the nonsense because i am used to dealing with it at work. if people are not used to dealing with men at this level, it can be intimidating.

katdov and others looking to hire people at this level:

with the exception of a real company, most of the freelancers at this level have issues.
in 25 years of working with scores of these guys, there is one thing i have learned, if you “strip away” all the issues, you are left with very few or no candidates. as you pick them, you have to pick your poison. some people are great trades people but crappy communicators or have poor interpersonal skills or a great attitude but no real training. others have substance abuse issues. others have sticky fingers. People with issues make it in large corporations as well – someone might be brutal to deal with or even abusive, but if they make money, they are tolerated. somehow they make it in politics as well.

as a professional, i am thinking of this person because he knows his stuff and knows how to do it – unsupervised. but also as a professional, i do not feel i can refer anyone around without pointing out a character trait that someone might encounter. this is partly why i do not ever refer these ” guys” around. that said, this guy is 56 years old and has been doing this a long time (he is my age).

while i would be willing to put forth the name of someone who might get rude if there is a dispute about terms or he is asked to return the following day to tidy something up without additional compensation before he gets paid, the list of people I would not put forth include those who “don’t stir paint”, “don’t sand things”, think rollers are for trim, and don’t know what primer is – and their are plenty of them out there as well.

the way to really avoid issues with freelancers is not to use them. hire companies that put their names and reputations out there. Garvey Painting is one i can think of but he may be mostly in Manhattan. there might be some listed here in the trades directory.

nobody has come on here to offer one up, so i will with some caveats.

i have a painter. i am a contractor and used this man some years back in the course of my jobs. he does excellent work. he is talented and he did great repair work on the curved plaster crown in my own house. he is a great skim coater and taper. when he used to work for me, i used to allow him to contract with the customers when we were done with what ever job he was doing with me. i still use him in my own home and my wife swears by him. we had him here a couple of months back and he did great work and my wife wants him back now and we will call him again soon.

it is a shame, but i can no longer openly refer him to customers and will not refer him here without some warning. while everyone loves his work, there were other issues – i would say about 50% of my customers had a problem with him and they were very similar to issues i had with him. usually these happen over who is responsible for what (written contracts would help; the last time he was in my house, he did not paint bo th sides of a door i told him i wanted done – “next time” he said – and i let it go just to keep the peace and i tipped him as well). one time he dropped little drops of primer on some stairs and when the customer withheld payment (she might be reading this now) i told him i was holding his until the issue was resolved and he got quite rude with me and took no responsibility for the issue. another customer told me there was a question about something with money and he got “intimidating” (and that customer might be reading this as well). he also got in an argument with he tile guy on a job once and it went way over the top over something accidental.

i still use this guy here at my house in spite of what i have written above. i can deal with him. my wife swears by him – we have always trusted him, even alone with our son when he was a toddler. he has always had free access to my shop when he is around and i never once had a worry about his integrity. it is sometimes his manner and professionalism, not the quality of his work. there are people who have used him who have never seen his bad side (my wife has never seen anything but his good side and he has to be sure it stays that way or she will not want him back here).

things must be slow now as he texted me the other day. i do wish to help him as when things are good with him, he is pleasant and knowing him a long time, i see the person. and he is highly talented. but i cannot openly refer him around. if you or anyone else want a really good painter with some issues, feel free to contact me at one of the emails on my website:
