Klenosky Paint at 543 Metropolitan Avenue across from Crest Hardware in Williamsburg used to carry special paint for cabinets and probably still does. I was in there recently and a customer came in looking for something else and raved about the cabinet paint which if memory serves she said she had put on 10 years ago and was still going strong. Might be worth a call to see if they’re open and have it.

also, if you have lacquer on them and wish to lacquer them again, a customer of mine just had his 1980’s era lacquered cabinets sprayed where they sat in his house. spraying lacquer can be a problem in a multi family and there are safety concerns (fire, the stuff is worse than gasoline; it is illegal to spray in a residence) but it can be done. let’s see if that customer see’s this post and comments, he is on here from time to time. if he does not, i will see if i can rattle his cage a little. cityguz, are you reading this? any comments or suggestions?

for the cabinets be aware that even though paint may go on them ( a high quality, hard paint or a urethane color coat) you are looking for a wood finisher. your person will come from the woodwork side of things. the reason i say this is, a painter may look at this and think they can slap paint on. and many “painters” i know now, do not understand how to sand something out; before, during, and after. to do wood work, sanding will be key. rubbing it out after will be key. they will also have to consider what is on there now as we cannot simply walk in and put any finish over lacquer.

in short, you are not looking to have your cabinets painted. you are looking to have them “refinished” – even if the top coat is a form of paint or something with a dye in it. also, there used to be a special cabinet grade paint around, hard with solids in it. morrello might have been the name; something like that is better than plain old latex.

someone who does a lot interior trim work. when i do doors (inside or out) i treat them not as though i am painting them, but as if i am “finishing” them. sand, prime, sand, paint, sand… and after each sanding, dust them off. i learned this process not in woodworking school but refinishing an old car under the direction of an antique auto restoration person.

i used to do this kind of work but i tend to be busy on other things and i might price myself out of something like this just because i have gotten specialized.
